Ok, so you’ve read articles on MSN and Yahoo that tell you to slow down to 45 so you can get slammed by a semi-trailer truck, reduce drag by closing your windows in the noon day heat, by removing storage compartments, leaving luggage and pets and people at home, and by checking your tire pressure to make sure it’s not 2 lbs low.
Here are a few techniques that I use to save Gasoline and stop filling the pockets of the beaurocrats and the oil companies.
1. Only buy enough gasoline to get where you’re going.
This is a simple technique. Figure out how many gallons your vehicle gets per gallon and then apply that to your trip. For instance, my vehicle only gets around 19mpg in the city. If I need to go across town, I only need less than one gallon of gas. If I need to get from San Francisco to San Jose ... roughly about 20 miles, I still only need about 1.5 gallons of gasoline. You may say "well, I’m still using the same amount of gas?” You’re reducing waste and evaporation and the weight of the gasoline itself as well. And if you’re worried about running out of gas? ... keep a 1 or 2 gallon container of gasoline with you so you don’t have to get stuck in East Palo Alto in your BMW. Additionally, you’re making a statement to the oil companies and the government that you’re not happy with the current situation and that you’re not a blind consumer who is going to happily give your money away.
2. Only drive part of the way to your destination.
Sometimes it’s easier to drive to bart, the train, or the bus stop and then take public transportation the rest of the way. You will get some time to read or prepare, and you’ll meet some people along the way. You’ll also only be driving your vehicle 1/3 of the way to your destination. Caution: Be sure to check the parking signs for street cleaning or other ridiculous orders of the law. The City of San Francisco likes to raise parking tickets every 6 months. Our great leader Gavin New-Some Wife ... or whatever his name is ... has already endorsed another parking ticket hike that raises parking tickets to $60. Or worse yet, you’ll return to your vehicle and find it completely gone waiting for you to pay $250 to get it out of "jail" ... the impound yard.
3. Park further away from your destination and walk, bike, skateboard, or rollerblade the rest of the way. You will save time, gasoline money, and you will stay fit and relieve stress all at the same time. Plus, you’ll feel good!
4. Sell the car, don’t pay registration, parking tickets, insurance, or for gasoline at all. This makes an even bigger statement to the powers that be. You’re smart and you’re not gonna throw your hard earned money away. Walk or buy a bicycle. Hitch-hike or "thumb it". Throw on your rollerblades or jump on your skateboard and put your suit in your backpack. I’m sure your employer will understand?
5. Ask for a ride or rideshare. Some people understand that we’re not all greedy and selfish and out to make a buck. You’ll improve your relationship with your neighbor, improve your community, and you’ll save lots of money not buying gasoline that thousands of people are dying for in Iraq and other countries.
6. Use Mental Telepathy or Out of Body Experiences to transport yourself across town. Get technical and arrange an online meeting rather than having to go out. Use video conferencing, the phone, or Indian smoke messages. Your inner self will appreciate the energy you’re not wasting and your soul will be enlightened.
7. Trade your vehicle in for a motorcycle, scooter, or moped. Japan and China has done it for years. Most of these machines get 100mpg to my recollection. It may be less now. There are also other alternatives like motorized bicycles, motorized skateboards "weoooorrrrrrrooooowwwww", horses, sheep, cattle, and canine powered sleds!
I hope this has helped you save money, lives, and gasoline. Notice that I didn't encourage you to stay in your cars like MSN and Yahoo.
Have fun out there and "Make a Difference".
